Vital Signs: Epidemiology and Recent Trends in Methicillin-Resistant and in Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Infections — United States

CDC’s MMWR and Medscape are proud to introduce a new FREE continuing education (CE) activity [t.emailupdates.cdc.gov]. The goal of this activity is to describe updated estimates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bloodstream infections and associated in-hospital mortality, according to recent data from the Emerging Infections Program population surveillance and two large electronic health record data sets from more than 400 U.S. acute care hospitals. A CDC analysis of data reported in MMWR is the basis of the activity. 

This CE activity is intended for infectious disease physicians, critical care physicians, internists, nurses, pharmacists, public health officials, and other physicians who treat and manage patients with MRSA and MSSA infections. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to

1. describe updated estimates of MRSA and MSSA bloodstream infections and associated in-hospital mortality;
2. determine possible reasons for changing trends in MRSA and MSSA bloodstream infections and associated in-hospital mortality; and
3. explain clinical and public health implications of changing trends in MRSA and MSSA bloodstream infections and associated in-hospital mortality.
